Eligibility, Fieldwork, and the BACB Application

Before you can sit the BCBA exam, the BACB has to confirm you're eligible. That means three building blocks — a graduate degree, qualifying coursework, and supervised fieldwork — followed by a formal application. This topic walks through each, plus the important changes arriving in 2027.

1. A qualifying graduate degree

You need a master's or doctoral degree. Under the current (2022) requirements there are four eligibility pathways depending on how your degree and coursework line up:

2. Qualifying coursework

For the coursework route (Pathway 2), you need 315 classroom hours of graduate-level behavior-analytic content covering specific areas — ethics and professionalism, concepts and principles, measurement, experimental design, assessment, intervention, and supervision. Two rules trip people up:

• The coursework must be completed at a qualifying institution (typically via a Verified Course Sequence, or VCS).

• It must be within 10 years of the year you apply (apply in 2026 → coursework from 2016 onward).

3. Supervised fieldwork

You also need supervised, hands-on experience. You can accrue it as one type or a mix:

Concentrated fieldwork requires more frequent supervision contacts in exchange for fewer total hours. Whichever you choose, it must meet all the requirements in the BACB's BCBA Handbook — including supervisor qualifications, the ratio of supervision to hours, and proper documentation on Fieldwork Verification Forms. Sloppy documentation is a common cause of delays, so track hours meticulously as you go rather than reconstructing them later.

The application, step by step

Once you've met your pathway's requirements, you apply through your BACB portal:

1. Submit and pay. Select the BCBA certification application, identify your pathway, and pay the $245 application fee. Your status then shows "awaiting documents."

2. Send documents within 90 days. Official transcripts and signed Fieldwork Verification Forms. Miss the 90-day window and you start over — new application, new fee.

3. Review (up to 45 days). BACB staff review a complete application; missing documents add time.

4. Get your Authorization to Test (ATT). On approval, you'll receive instructions to schedule with Pearson VUE, and your two-year authorization window begins. Within it you may take the exam up to eight times, with a minimum 30-day wait between attempts.

The BACB is making significant changes to BCBA and BCaBA requirements that take effect on 1 January 2027. The headline for candidates already in the pipeline:

What's changing at a high level:

• Pathways consolidate from four to two. The current four eligibility pathways (accredited program, graduate coursework, faculty, and postdoctoral experience) are being streamlined into two primary routes, with a greater emphasis on degrees from accredited/recognized programs.

• Coursework and fieldwork standards are being updated to align with the streamlined pathways and the 6th Edition content, continuing the field's shift from "counting hours" toward demonstrated competencies.

What this means for you:

• If you can finish and apply in 2026, strongly consider doing so to lock in the current rules — especially if your route depends on one of the pathways being consolidated.

• If you'll qualify in 2027 or later, plan against the new requirements from the start, and pick a program/VCS that has already aligned to them.
