BCBA Test Day Strategy: Pacing and Timing Tips

Months of study come down to a single four-hour sitting. The good news: you already know the content by now. What separates a pass from a near-miss on the day is usually execution — how you manage the clock, your nerves, and the questions designed to trip you up. Here's how to bring it home.

Do the math on pacing

You have four hours for 185 questions, and — crucially — that clock also covers the tutorial, the terms and conditions, and any breaks. Net of those, you're looking at a little over one minute per question (~77 seconds) on the questions themselves.

That average hides a lot of variation: a clean concept question might take 30 seconds, while a data-interpretation or multi-part scenario could eat three minutes. So you pace to the average, not to any single question.

Use time checkpoints

Break the exam into segments and set target question numbers for points in time. For example, on the raw ~77-seconds-per-question pace:

Jot a couple of these targets on your scratch material at the start. If you're well behind a checkpoint, you know immediately to speed up — no nasty surprises at question 150.

Don't get bogged down

The single most common time-management error is sinking five minutes into one stubborn question while twenty easy points sit unanswered later in the exam.

• Give each question one honest pass of ~90 seconds. If you haven't cracked it, eliminate the obvious wrongs, pick the best remaining option, flag it, and move on.

• Come back with fresh eyes. Flagged questions often look easier on a second pass, once your brain has quietly chewed on them.

Always answer — there's no penalty for guessing

Your score is the number of scored questions you get right; wrong answers cost you nothing extra. So:

• Never leave a question blank. A blind guess is a ~25% shot (four options); a blank is a guaranteed zero.

• If the clock is nearly out, spend the last seconds making sure every remaining question has an answer, even if you have to pick one letter down the line.

Review — but change answers carefully

If you finish with time in hand, revisit your flagged questions first, then anything you rushed. But only change an answer when you have a concrete reason — you misread the stem, or spotted new information — not on a vague hunch. Second-guessing solid first instincts loses more points than it saves.

Breaks cost you clock

Unlike some exams, the BCBA timer keeps running during breaks. If you need one, keep it short and purposeful — stand, breathe, reset — and factor it into your pacing. Many candidates push straight through; know your own stamina, which is exactly why a full four-hour simulation in your final review is so valuable.

Manage the traps and your mindset

• Read the actual question. Scenario stems bury the ask at the end ("which is the next step?", "which is the best measure?"). Answer the question they asked, not the one you expected.

• Watch for absolutes and qualifiers — "always," "never," "most appropriate" — they often decide between two close options.

• Anchor on the principle first. Identify what is happening behaviorally before you evaluate the options; it collapses plausible distractors fast.

• Breathe and reset. If a run of hard questions rattles you, take three slow breaths. Everyone hits a rough patch; it's not a signal about your overall score.

The 24 hours before

• Taper, don't cram. A light flashcard skim and an Ethics-Code refresh beat a panicked all-nighter.

• Sleep and fuel. Stamina is part of the test; treat it like the four-hour endurance event it is.
