The church had been accused of financial fraud and abuse, and a group of former members called Concerned Relatives persuaded Leo J. Ryan, a U.S. congressman, to visit Jonestown in 1978. \n\nAlthough the visit went well initially, Ryan and his team were attacked by cult members and killed in a shootout on their departure.
